What is the association between Dementia and Hearing loss?

The Lancet published in December 2018, is the most widely recognised health research journal, found a link between the risk of developing dementia and hearing loss. It found 9 factors associated with increased risk of developing dementia:
  • hearing loss
  • low level of education
  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Depression
  • Social Isolation The review found that NOT only is hearing loss the highest of the nine risk factors, but it occured in approximately 32% of individuals older than 55 years. If you have a mild hearing loss you are two times more at risk of developing dementia in your lifetime than someone with normal hearing. If you have a moderate hearing loss, you are three times more at risk, and if you have a severe hearing loss, you are five time more at risk of developing dementia.
